Why nanoparticles accumulate in tumours?

So I read that nanoparticles of gold or other metals are used to enhance radiotherapy. Do you know how that is and why nanoparticles accumulate in tumors?

Nanoparticles transport the therapeutic agents to the tumor via the enhanced permeability and retention (EPR) effect and passively accumulate at the tumor site.

Compared to conventional drug delivery, nanomedicines preferably accumulate at the tumor area due to the enhanced permeability and retention (EPR) effect of the tumor.
