What happens to the colon in a temporal ileostomy without a colectomy?

Is that what the mucus fistula is?

From my (layman) understanding, the colon is routed out much like the ileostomy, but a small stoma. The site is kept moist with Vaseline gauze, and cleaned regularly. The colon continues to produce a mucus which are passed like normal stools, if it is possible.
