I created this thread for a general discussion on sickle cell anemia. To make people aware of the dangers of this condition.

Sickle cell anemia is a group of disorders that causes red blood cells to become misshapen and break down.

With sickle cell disease, an inherited group of disorders, red blood cells contort into a sickle shape. The cells die early, leaving a shortage of healthy red blood cells (sickle cell anaemia) and can block blood flow causing pain (sickle cell crisis).

If both parents have the gene, there's a 1 in 4 chance of each child they have being born with sickle cell disease. The child's parents often will not have sickle cell disease themselves and they're only carriers of the sickle cell trait.

Now, the causes..
Genetics. Sickle cell disease is caused by mutations in the beta-globin (HBB) gene that lead to the production of an abnormal version of a subunit of hemoglobin — the protein responsible for carrying oxygen in red blood cells. This mutated version of the protein is known as hemoglobin S.
